Job Title: Floor Assistant 

Hourly Rate: $17.50 per hour ($18.09 beginning July 1, 2025); non-exempt classification 

Duration: Academic Year (Fall/Spring) with the possibility of extension 

Work Schedule: Up to 20 hours/week (no more than 999 hours per calendar year.) Schedule developed with the Recreation Coordinator 

Training Period: Two months with the possibility of extension 

General Statement

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, the Floor Assistant provides programmatic and manual support to the University-Student Union (U-SU). The Floor Assistant is responsible for performing varied tasks and projects related to the effective operation and maintenance of the U-SU Recreation facility. 

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides quality customer service to the campus community;
  • Ensures activities are being conducted safely and appropriately;
  • Provides support with enforcing policies and procedures;
  • Performs opening and closing procedures;
  • Routinely checks for safety and maintenance concerns;
  • Responds to injuries with proper emergency procedures;
  • Maintains a clean and safe U-SU Recreation facility;
  • Assists with sanitation and preventative maintenance of equipment;
  • Assists with projects and events, and may assist staff with leading Membership Aides on projects;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Currently enrolled Cal State LA student with a minimum of 6 units undergraduate units and a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0, or graduate student with at least 4 graduate units and a minimum Cal State LA cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0;
  • Willingness to work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student body and staff;
  • Ability to interact positively and build effective working relationships;
  • Willingness to provide effective customer service promptly and courteously;
  • Ability to respond to walk-ins and other inquiries;
  • Proficient oral, written, and listening skills;
  • Strong organizational skills: the ability to prioritize, complete assigned duties, and varied tasks,
  • Strong interpersonal and group communication skills in a team environment;
  • Must be self-motivated, able to adapt to changing workloads, and have some independent judgment;
  • Experience using various desktop and web-based applications, and office equipment;
  • Ability to make decisions based on established policies and procedures;
  • Certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association within 30 days of hire;
  • Knowledgeable of fitness and wellness programs, and fitness equipment preferred;
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.
